1955 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX MONZA
1955 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX MONZA

Stirling Moss (16) in his Mercedes W196 cedes position to Juan Fangio after leading away from the start. Fangio went on to win the race but Moss retired with a broken engine after establishing the fastest lap.
Moss's car is Wi96-9, hurriedly prepared after his original car was unsuitable in practice. It has the old 1954 streamlined body but with specially bulged bonnet to accommodate recent engine developments. This particular car was recently sold for $53.9M at auction but it now features rebuilt bodywork around the cockpit area similar to that of Fangio's car seen in the painting.

Original acrylic painting on 16" x 12" linen board, with 21" x 18" natural wood frame with linen slip.
